The ATA Carnet, is an international customs document that permits the tax-free and duty-free temporary export and import of goods for up to one year. It can be used in 80 countries, in multiple trips up to its one-year validity.

The most common users of ATA carnets are companies shipping goods for exhibitions and trade shows, senders of commercial samples and professional equipment for music, photography, film or TV.

However, any UK resident or business can apply for an ATA Carnet, providing that the good it covers will be re-exported within 12 months.

Applying for your ATA Carnet

We will remind you when your ATA carnet is due to be returned.

Simplifying customs border crossing
The ATA Carnet simplifies clearing your goods through customs in exporting and importing countries, by replacing the customs documents that you’d typically need to complete, to cross the border.

Each ATA Carnet contains pre-prepared customs declaration forms, to be used at customs border offices and serves as a guarantee for customs duties and taxes, if they become necessary, goods remain in the country of temporary importation, or the Carnet is not returned or used properly.

Issued by Chambers of Commerce, the ATA Carnet removes the need to lodge bonds, appoint agents, or complete paperwork, simplifying border crossings for the temporary admission of samples, professional equipment and goods for exhibitions or trade fairs.

The Guarantee
We have a large ’rolling’ guarantee with the Chamber of Commerce, as security to cover the highest rate of duty and taxes, which the majority of our clients prefer to use.

You can provide your own guarantee, if you prefer, or if you are visiting a country where the carnet cannot go in a third party name.

Replacement Carnet
For goods to remain in a foreign country after the carnet has expired, host Customs must be approached at least one month before the expiry date, to request a replacement. On receipt of written confirmation from the host Customs authority, we can obtain a new carnet, which can be used to re-export the goods back into the UK.

Substitute
If an ATA carnet is lost we can obtain a substitute carnet, with the same validity dates and number, but there are requirements to obtain retrospective customs stamps and the Chamber of Commerce will not discharge your liability on a lost carnet for the full liability period, which is 33 months from the date of issue.

Without sight of the used carnet, the Chamber cannot establish where it has been used, if it has been used correctly, and whether there are likely to be any claims from foreign Customs.
